一筋光信じる・暗闇に怯える
Writings and notes about special projects on which I am currently working. Most of these projects involve music in some way, especially the music of Latin America, USA, Russia and Japan.

Why Ayumi Hamasaki?!
I made a playlist on iTunes of Ayumi’s best song mixes, because she has so many of them that I decided to pick out the best ones. I’m very proud of my list, but it really shows how the quality in her work really went down as the years went by. Her music used to be so awesome! It’s still pretty good now…but it’s not the same at all. Sometimes she’ll come up with a genius song or two, but most of the time now it’s not overwhelmingly spectacular.
I tried to make a similar playlist of Utada Hikaru, but she doesn’t have a fraction of the material that Ayumi has…so I gave up on that one. hehe.
I’ve been pondering my obsession with Ayumi Hamasaki and I’ve realized that I’ve never obsessed with any artist for this long. Usually by now I’ve moved on to other artists, but I am still just as enthusiastically in love with her music as I ever was. I think I’ve found a number of good reasons for this.
1. Ayumi Hamasaki writes all of her own lyrics in a manner that is very personal and gives the listener a very strong sense of empathy.
2. Her songs are very well composed and allow the message in her lyrics to make that much more of an impact. The compositions are what really amplify the feelings in each song.
3. She has a ridiculously enormous amount of well-crafted remixes that allow for different styles that display different aspects of songs (such as the “Laugh & Peace” remixes for the songs Far away and NEVER EVER).
She’s such a unique artist for these reasons, and so many peculiarities about her really keep me interested in her work. Out of all the artists I’ve been obsessed with over the years, Ayumi is definitely the most interesting. She’s inspired me in so many ways and I’ve definitely become close to her music. I think the reason why I haven’t moved on to a different obsession is because Ayumi Hamasaki is difficult to replace. It’s easy to dismiss her as the strange girl with an unconventional voice, but I’m glad I’ve looked past that (it’s part of what makes her so special) and experienced how great of an artist she really is.
